  1. This is a quick sanity check of DMA and Verite in your system.
  2.  
  3. Run this in DOS or a DOS box. The two .voh files must be in
  4. the same directory as dmatest.exe.
  5. The test checks if the Verite busmastering capability is enabled at the
  6. time the test is run (i.e., you may need to try it in DOS, in a 
  7. Windows-shutdown-to-DOS, or in a DOS box; each of these has been
  8. known to give different results.) Some system BIOSes have been 
  9. known to disable busmastering even though the Verite chip supports it.
  10. The test then checks if bus snooping is working. Some older
  11. motherboards do not implement this correctly, and DMA will fail
  12. to work properly. If you have such a system, you must explicitly
  13. disable DMA for the Verite chip. See your board vendor for
  14. instructions that may be specific to the Windows drivers you use.
  15. Finally, the test measures approximate FIFO and DMA performance
  16. (the numbers should be considered only +/- 10% accurate.)
  17. A "Test completed successfully." message means that DMA should run just
  18. fine on your system in that particular configuration.
  19. You may be able to improve your DMA performance by adjusting the value
  20. of the PCI latency timer. Increasing it can improve the numbers
  21. reported. Changing that timer, however, may have unforseen effects
  22. on your system.
